Frequently Asked Question (FAQ)

There is no low season to visit Cusco or Machu Picchu, it all entirely depends on what works best for you, however hiking the Inca Trail is closed in February for maintenance. Most cultural tours are open the entire year although we recommend visiting April to November for the best weather.

If your main reason to visit is to see Machu Picchu, then the time of year does not matter as it is an incredible year-round experience.

The weather changes regularly in Machu Picchu. Typically, during the dry season (April-November) the early mornings are foggy, and often chilly. In the late mornings, the clouds clear up and the sun comes out, so it can get quite hot. However, please keep in mind that sometimes there is still rain in June and sunshine in December.

The wet season is from mid-November to mid-April, with February being the rainiest month. The Inca Trail is closed in February, although Machu Picchu is still open.

Cusco, in the Peruvian Andes and the Sacred Valley, has a rainy season which starts in late November and finishes at the end of March. Although the rains are infrequent and generally quick, they can at times be very heavy.

The temperature in the rainy season is typically warmer because it is summer on the Southern Hemisphere.

Between April and November, the temperatures are generally lower particularly from June-August but there is little rain. Some warm clothing is typically needed.

Most of this adventure takes place at altitudes ranging from 8,000 to 12,500 ft. (2,400 to 4,800 m.) above sea level. Since our adventure begins in Cusco and continues to the lower Sacred Valley (9,200 ft. or 2,800 m.) then on to Machu Picchu (8,000 ft. or 2,400 m.), you will have a chance to become somewhat acclimated before you reach the higher elevation of Cusco (11,200 ft. or 3,400 m.). However, our tours are designed to minimize the risk of altitude sickness.

Most of our cultural trips accommodate all fitness levels, however our hiking adventure tours can be physically strenuous. They are not recommended for anyone with difficulty hiking in high altitudes. Activities on this journey include challenging terrain like uneven surfaces, steep inclines and irregular stairs and cobblestone streets.

Rafting on the Urubamba River (Class 2) is considered to be gentle for the average person. Bear in mind that most of the trip is at altitudes between 8,000 – 11,000 feet above sea level. Our experts have created the itinerary with the highest altitude (Cusco) towards the end of our adventure to allow our guests to acclimate. This trip requires a high amount of stamina to participate in most activities.

Are you traveling with your family? We have programs designed specifically for families with children.

While we welcome children ages 8 and up to travel to Cusco and Machu Picchu with our tour trips, we recommend that children be at least 12 years old for the Peru trip. This is based on several factors including flight times, jet lag, duration of vacation, high altitudes, long daily programming, potential for extreme temperatures in the summer and the amount of physical activity. (e.g., walking on uneven surfaces, up and down stairs, and cobblestone sidewalks)

Yes, we accommodate all types of nutritional needs. Please let us know in advance about your special dietary needs.

If you want to accompany your kids with you, you can absolutely take them with you to visit Machu Picchu. There’s no specific age to enter Machu Picchu. You just have to pay an entry fee if your kid is 7 or above 7 years of age.

We take care of all transportation from the beginning of your trip to the end. This includes transfers to and from airports, bus terminals and train stations.
